Quick Cut Video

Watch the video below to see an example of a quick cut video.

This video is a short example of Fast Cutting. Notice that all the clips are pretty much 3 seconds or less?

What is Quick Cutting or Fast Cutting in Video?

Quick-Cutting or Fast- Cutting is a style of editing using short shots (usually 3 seconds or less) in a sequence to give the feeling of energy, and chaos or to make a boring subject seem interesting. This technique will use a lot of close-ups and extreme close-ups to help tell the story. Your assignment is to learn about Fast-Cut Editing and to create your own video using this technique.

Watch this next video, you can skip the intro and jump to 53 seconds in and see the example of a fast cut with regular shots weaved in. The regular shots are longer stationary shots that give a pause or help slow down the action as to not overwhelm the viewer.

Tips for a Quick Cut Video

In the video below, you can learn 5 tips to help when using the Fast-Cut Editing technique for your project.

Assignment

For this project, you will create a short video showing how to do something from beginning to end using the Fast-Cut Technique and sound effects. There are lots of examples on this page to draw ideas from, but here are a few to get you started: Getting ready to leave for school, making a meal, baking something, or cleaning something. Each person will create their own idea and shot list.  Then during filming you will pair up and help your partner shoot their idea and they will help you film yours.

Shot List

The first step in any video is the pre-production or planning. For this project, you will start by selecting your task and creating your shot list. Click on the button below to complete your shot list. See the example below for help.

More info

Create your own Fast Cut video on a task or someone doing something. Once you have your shot list roughed out, you can begin filming. The video should be about 60 seconds and it can be longer. This video should have energy from the quick cuts, so make sure to pick a song that fits. Make sure to have a few regular shots (longer than the 3 seconds) spaced out to slow down the pace. If you are unsure, you can use my shot list as an example of when or where. Remember to have a beginning, middle, and end to your video with the final shot being the pay off or the results of the task. The quick clips should not be longer than 1 sec, more like 20 frames, but you should film each movement 2 times in the same recording.  This last shot should be a regular-length shot. Then end with your credits.
