LT: I CAN USE COLOR TO HELP TELL MY STORY. I CAN USE A VIDEO EDITING PROGRAM TO HELP CREATE A VIDEO USING BASIC EDITING.

Basic Editing in Premiere

EDITING IS ONE OF THE FOUNDATIONAL TOOLS THAT EVERYONE NEEDS TO KNOW TO MAKE A VIDEO. BESIDES HOW TO FILM, HOW TO EDIT CAN TAKE BORING FOOTAGE AND TURN IT INTO SOMETHING EXCITING AND NEW. THIS ASSIGNMENT WILL USE PHOTOS FROM ONLINE TO CREATE A SHORT VIDEO BASED ON A COLOR. THE KEY TO THIS ASSIGNMENT IS THE EDITING, BUT A BONUS IS TO LEARN HOW TO USE COLOR IN YOUR VIDEOS AT THE SAME TIME.

WHY DID THE DIRECTOR CHOOSE TO USE BLACK AND WHITE AT THE BEGINNING OF THE WIZARD OF OZ AND THEN SWITCH TO COLOR WHEN DORTHY WAS IN OZ?

Color

Color is everywhere we look in our world. Some colors are vibrant and others are more muted. What a lot of people do not know is that colors have meaning. The colors an artist uses their artwork tells a story just as much as their subject matter. In this lesson students will look at color theory and their meanings in film. If you have ever watched the Wizard of Oz, you have seen a perfect example of using color in a film. The beginning is all muted by using sepia tone, but when Dorthy lands in Oz, the colors are vibrant and bright. This moment took the audiences breath away. The use of color gave it an "over the rainbow" feeling. It also helped to set up who were the good guys vs the bad guys. Color is a big part of composition and storytelling.

Color as Meaning

THINK ABOUT WHAT THE COLORS MEAN AND HOW THEY WERE USED. SEE THE CHART BELOW TO UNDERSTAND THE MEANINGS OF EACH COLOR.

Now see how Disney uses these colors and their meanings in the animated movies they make. Pay attention to bold and soft uses of the colors too.

Assignment

Students will create a short video using still images (photos) based on a single color - ensure you have a variety of images. Arrange the images in your timeline in order of least intense to more intense (dull to bright) representation of the theme color. Trim your clips so that the cuts are faster (ie. shots are shorter) as the color intensifies. Try and make the exported video around 30 seconds

Project Examples

Steps to Complete

  • Students will select a color as the theme of their video

  • Students will find several images that relate to their chosen color (minimum of 25)

  • Use Pexels or Pixabay to find videos and download them to the computer or to your phone. The videos need to match the different concepts in your poem.

  • Use the Photo on the website to get the meaning of the color you chose.

  • Students will edit using a video editing app to make each photo appear for a certain period of time

  • As students edit, they should use the images with the least vibrance/saturation first and work their way to the most vibrant/saturated images

  • As the images proceed, they should shorten in their duration

  • Students should also find music to fit their short video.

  • The final video should be about 30 seconds long - but you can do longer

  • The final image should be a title slide with the name of the color (using that color) as well as the meaning of the color in smaller font.

  • As always students have the choice of taking their own images for this project

Get Your Videos

LT: I CAN USE COPYRIGHT-FREE IMAGES.

Find 20-25 photos on Pexels or Pixabay site (royalty-free and copyright free) based on a color of your choice.
Download and Save the images to a folder with your name.
You will use these images to edit with once you have all of your photos. Use the link below

Editing With Adobe Premiere

LT: I CAN OPEN PREMIERE USING MY ACCOUNT.

The next step in this project is to open up Premiere. If you haven't finished setting up your account do so before this step. See the link below. Once your account is set up, follow the steps below to open Premiere for the first time.

Adding in Videos

LT: I CAN IMPORT PHOTOS TO MY PROJECT

In this step, students will find their photos and import them into the project and start adding them to the timeline.

  • Start working on your video

  • Start to assemble your clips from least to most intense color

  • Begin to shorten each image, for example if the first photo is 4 seconds, then the next image is under 4, then around 3, then so on....

  • Watch the video below about how to complete this part of the editing.

Add Text

LT: I CAN CREATE TEXT FOR MY VIDEO

In this step, students will learn how to add text and graphics to their video.

  1. Add a title to the beginning with the name of the color

  2. Add a title to the end with the name of the color and the meaning

Add Music

LT: I CAN ADD AUDIO TO MY VIDEO
Students will be able to choose from a wide variety of copyright-free music using the link below. The music will be added to your video. Please choose a song that fits with your color theme.

Exporting

LT: I CAN EXPORT MY VIDEO

Before you can turn the video in, you will have to make it into an MP4 file. Right now the videos are just being held in a container and basically taped together. The file you have is that container. If you turn in the Adobe file, I do not have access to your clips and all I would see is a warning saying it needed to locate the files. So this is an important step to not miss.

Turn Your Video In

LT: I can publish my project

The last step is to turn in your video to Padlet. The link can be found in Google Classroom. The video must be added to Padlet in order for a grade. You will not be able to see anyone else's project until I approve them. You will see awaiting approval notice after uploading your video.

Make sure to use your account or type your name so the video is not turned in as Anonymous.

Another Example

Tips

  • Add in music that is copyright free

  • Add in the title slide at the beginning to show your color

  • Add in your title slide at the end that tells the name of the color and what it means

  • Adjust your photo timing so each image gets shorter and shorter as in the example

  • Make adjustments to each photo's timing.

  • Begin to finish the project by Exporting the Video as an H.264

  • When your video is downloaded, turn it in by adding it to Padlet.

  • Make sure you watch the video before turning it in. If not correct, fix and re-export
