Making Tile Map Sprites

What are game tiles?

Game Tiles are used in lots of games and are usually referred to in reference to Tilemaps Tile Maps are a popular and efficient way to build the scene of a game. Tiles as seen above can be used as platforms, pathways, ground levels, etc. Most tiles are drawn using a square canvas and then colored and shaded as needed. Some tiles allow the game developer to create rounded corners, ramps, or inclines as seen below. Most tilemaps will also include the other objects needed for the game

In this project, students will create a character and tiles for their game using Photoshop. They will then create to collect and to subtract health from their character. The tiles will create the background and the objects will be used to interact with the character.

Start the Project

LT: I can create a new project in Photoshop.

Use the video below to start your project.

Choose a Character

Look at some of the examples below to get an idea of the character you would like to create. Once you know what animal you want to make, use the image as a reference. In other words, look at the image as you create your own, BUT MAKE THE CHARACTER YOUR OWN.

Color Character

LT: I can add color in photoshop to my character

Make Tiles - 1 Ground tile to turn in

LT: I can create a tile to represent the ground.
The first videos shows how to make a Tile. The 2nd shows how to make a second style.

Grass Tile - 1 Grass tile to turn in

LT: I can create a tile to represent the grass.
Create a tile to represent grass/path for your game.

Pick Ups- 1 to turn in

LT: I can create an object to be a pick up in the game.
Choose a type of fruit for your character to collect in the game.

Turn In PNGs to Classroom

LT: I can turn in my sprites for a grade.
