Cut on Action Practice

LT: I can edit to show continuity in movement

Watch the video below to see an example of how to cut on action.

This technique is used in almost every movie, TV show, or documentary. Because of how the cut is placed, between actions, the viewer doesn't even notice the shot changes. Your assignment is to edit a video and match the action.

Here is another way to look at the Match or Cut on Action for a more creative editing technique.

Cutting on action requires multiple clips of the same action as well as other actions to pick up where one action leaves off. In the video below, the tutorial shows how to use to camera shots to show a person kicking a ball. Watch how the action continues to flow even though the shot changes. Did you notice the cut?

Practice Assignment

In this project, you will use the clips provided to create a short video based on the shot list. You will make sure to cut on action, showing a continuous movement. See the example first before looking at the shot list.

Assignment

Use the clips provided and the shot list to create a video that shows continuous action. As you change shots, make sure the action matches the next shot in the same place. For example, if the person is reaching for the keys in one shot, the next shot should show the persons hand in the same spot. Use your videos and examples above as well as information learned in class to help guide your editing.
