LEARNING TARGET: I CAN UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT OF SHOT/REVERSE SHOT OR 180 DEGREE RULE. I CAN USE THE 180 DEGREE RULE. I CAN EDIT A CONVERSATION. I CAN USE A MICROPHONE FO RGOOD AUDIO. I CAN USE THE RULE OF THIRDS.

Fiming Dialogue

THIS ASSIGNMENT WILL BE LOOKING AT ONE OF THE MOST COMMON FILM TECHNIQUES IN FILMING DIALOGUE: SHOT REVERSE SHOT.

d4fd46bd-f11c-49ce-b1c3-061381c8f06c.jpeg

IT’S A REALLY SIMPLE CONCEPT ABOUT USING TWO SHOTS TO SHOW TWO PARTS OF ANY KIND OF ACTION; YOU HAVE YOUR FIRST SHOT SHOWING THE ACTION AND THEN A SECOND SHOWING THE REVERSE OF THAT SHOT (GENERALLY THE OTHER SIDE OF THE CAMERA - WHAT THE PERSON IS LOOKING AT, WHO THEY ARE TALKING TO, ETC.).

WATCH THIS VIDEO FROM FILM RIOT ON THE 180 DEGREE RULE AND TO SEE SHOT/REVERSE SHOT IN ACTION:

180 RULE DEFINITION:

THE RULE STATES THAT THERE’S A LINE, THE LINE OF ACTION, THAT SHOULD BE DRAWN BETWEEN INTERACTING SUBJECTS AND THAT CAMERAS SHOULD ONLY BE PLACED ON ONE SIDE OF THE LINE. THE REASON FOR THIS RULE IS THAT IF EDITING SHOTS FROM BOTH SIDES OF THE LINE IT WOULD MAKE FOR A DISORIENTING SCENE. THIS RULE EXISTS AS A WAY TO ENSURE THAT THE AUDIENCE IS ABLE TO UNDERSTAND THE SCENE.

IT’S PRIMARILY USED AS A RULE TO GUIDE DIALOGUE SCENES BUT IS JUST AS USEFUL IN ANY OTHER SCENE TO ENSURE SCREEN DIRECTION IS MAINTAINED; IE. SO THE AUDIENCE CAN EASILY UNDERSTAND THE ACTION IN A SCENE - WHO IS WHERE AND WHERE THEY ARE GOING.

LEARNING TARGET: I CAN UNDERSTAND IDENTIFY AND DEFINE THE RULE OF THIRDS. I CAN USE THE RULE OF THIRDS.

Composition - Rule of Thirds

NOW THAT YOU KNOW HOW TO FILM DIALOGUE, LETS LOOK AT HOW TO FRAME THAT DIALOGUE USING THE RULE OF THIRDS.

d4fd46bd-f11c-49ce-b1c3-061381c8f06c.jpeg

THE RULE OF THIRDS IMAGINES THAT A TIC TAC TOE BOARD IS DRAWN OVER THE IMAGE, OR THINK OF BREAKING THE IMAGE UP INTO 3RDS TOP TO BOTTOM AND LEFT TO RIGHT.  THEN THE AREAS WHERE THE LINES CROSS ARE AREAS OF IMPORTANCE.  EYES SHOULD ALWAYS GO ON THE TOP 3RD LINE WHEN FILMING PEOPLE.  THE PEOPLE WILL ALSO BE PLACED ON A THIRD LOOKING AT THE OTHER THIRD LINE OR SPACE

WATCH THIS VIDEO TO BETTER UNDERSTAND RULE OF THIRDS.

HOW TO FILM

START DIALOGUE WITH LONG OR MEDIUM SHOTS, EYES ARE ON THE TOP THIRD

Screen Shot 2022-10-12 at 9.31.07 AM.png

THEN FILM EACH PERSON AS THEY ARE TALKING USING CLOSE-UPS, EYES ARE ON THE TOP THIRD AND THEY ARE LOOKING AT A THIRD.

DO NOT FILM WITHOUT 180 RULE

WRONG

This just looks bad!

Assignment

STUDENTS WILL CREATE A SHORT VIDEO OF TWO PEOPLE HAVING A CONVERSATION AND FILM IT USING THE 180 DEGREE RULE OR SHOT/REVERSE SHOT AND GOOD COMPOSITION. STUDENTS WILL FILM THE CONVERSATION SEVERAL TIMES TO GET THE CORRECT SHOTS.

The video will use mostly close shots.  Students must continue to use the 4 Basic shots, Angles, and Movements.  Students will complete a script to use for filming and list the shots, angles, and movements on the list. Students will then edit their video, add in title, credits, and music as well as any effects or sound effects needed.

IDEAS

Use one of the 4 attached scripts to start your idea.  You will then complete the script (add in 2 more pages of dialogue before going out to film.  This must be completed and approved before filming.

NOTE THAT THE SCRIPT HAS SHOTS, ANGLES, AND MOVEMENTS ALREADY - THESE CAN BE CHANGED AS NEEDED, BUT YOU MUST USE ANGLES AND MOVEMENTS IN SOME OF THE SCRIPT.

MINIMUM OF 3 MOVEMENTS AND 5 ANGLES

YOU WILL WRITE PART OF THE SCRIPT AS A GROUP.

Ready to Film

NOW THAT YOUR SCRIPT IS DONE, YOU ARE READY TO FILM. LOOK AT THE GUIDELINES BELOW AND IN GOOGLE CLASSROOM TO SEE REQUIREMENTS AND TIPS ON HOW TO FILM THE PROJECT. THEN START FILMING. MAKE SURE TO HAVE YOUR FOOTAGE READY TO EDIT WHEN INSTRUCTED.

PRINT OUT SCRIPT - SEE INSTRUCTOR

THIS MUST BE FILMED AT SCHOOL. SEE ME IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS.

HOW TO FILM

SET UP YOUR CAMERA ON A TRIPOD IF YOU DO NOT HAVE ANYONE TO FILM AND EVERYONE IS IN THE SCENE.  YOU CAN USE THE PHONE GIMBALS STILL.  THESE WOULD BE GREAT FOR YOUR MOVING SHOTS THAT ARE NEEDED.

MICROPHONE

GET A SHOTGUN MIC FOR YOUR PHONE OR CAMERA TO CAPTURE BETTER AUDIO

ALL DIALOGUE SHOULD BE CLEAR.

NO TOILET FLUSHING, PEOPLE TALKING, ETC.

  • FILM YOUR ESTABLISHING SHOT

  • FILM YOUR DIALOGUE IN 1 OF TWO WAYS

    • ONE - FILM CLOSE-UPS AND MEDIUM SHOTS OF PEOPLE SAYING JUST THEIR LINES - SEE THE EXAMPLE

    • TWO - FILM CLOSE-UPS AND MEDIUM SHOTS OF  PEOPLE AS THEIR LINES APPEAR IN THE SCRIPT.

  • FILM YOUR EXTREME CLOSE-UPS

  • FILM ANY EXTRA SHOTS.
